Stock Watch: USGA doesn't ease into the new year

Stock Watch: USGA doesn't ease into the new year

Each week on GolfChannel.com, well examine which players stocks and trends are rising and falling in the world of golf. RISINGX-Man (+9%): Clearly comfortable as a chaser, Xander Schauffeles last three wins have come against the best fields the top 30 in the FedExCup (2017 Tour Championship), the top talent in the world (2018 WGC-HSBC Champions) and now nearly all of the 2018 Tour winners. Were only one week in, but that closing 62 may be the finest final round all year long.Gary Woodland (+8%): Itll go down, cruelly, as another blown 54-hole lead, but Woodland shot 68 and lost to the lowest final-round score to par in the last eight and a half years. G-Dub is a whopping 82 under par in 20 rounds this season. He looks like a transformed player. Paddy (+3%): It probably wont matter, because the Americans will be heavy favorites on a home setup at Whistling Straits, but Harrington will be a fastidious captain whom his players will be motivated to please. A no-brainer choice for 2020.USGA setups (+2%): Mike Davis is a smart man and hes poured his heart and soul into his job and the USGA, but it was long overdue that he handed over the setup responsibilities to someone else. They couldnt afford any more messes. How John Bodenhamer and Co. present Pebble will be fascinating to watch.J-Rose (+1%): The revolving door at world No. 1 continues, with Rose re-ascending to the top spot without hitting a shot. If only itd stay that simple.

FALLINGRorys Sundays (-1%): Though he was more patient at Kapalua, it still was a disappointing final round for McIlroy, who didnt make a birdie after the fifth hole, never made a putt longer than 4 feet and posted the worst score of anyone in the top 21. Even he seems to be searching for the right formula on Sunday, which is something we never thought wed type five years ago.Mid-round interviews (-2%): If done sparingly, with the proper tone and question, players inside the ropes would be able to offer invaluable insight for viewers. But theres a reason why no other sport allows the athletes to be interviewed mid-game its difficult to ask pressing questions at uncomfortable times in the heat of competition. Micing caddies (on a slight delay, of course) is the route to go.Knee drops (-3%): The impetus for this particular rule change that theres a better chance now that the dropped ball will remain within the relief area hasnt swayed the majority of Tour pros. Why not just drop anywhere between shoulder and knee height? This looks awkward and slightly ridiculous.Lucy Li (-4%): Even if shes ultimately cleared by the USGA, the 16-year-olds family brazenly put her amateur status in a precarious position by allowing her to star in an Apple ad without seeking prior approval. The allure was obvious, but they couldnt hold off another year or two, until shes ready to turn pro?Flagstick debate (-5%): Its more offensive aesthetically than anything else, but can you imagine the future Masters champion leaving the pin in on a 5-footer on 18? The USGA clearly didnt anticipate the Brysons of the world poking holes in what was supposed to be a sensible rule for weekend warriors.

Learning curve steep for 42-year-old rookie Thompson

HONOLULU Chris Thompson began his press conference Tuesday at the Sony Open with a predictable snafu.Rookie mistake, he smiled after being told he needed to use a microphone. In Thompsons defense, the learning curve has been steep for the 42-year-old PGA Tour rookie. After three decades plying his trade on mini-tours from South Florida to Oklahoma, Thompson finally broke through last season on the Web.com Tour to earn his first trip to the big leagues.Asked where hes been playing since he graduated from Kansas, Thompson quipped, Well, it's been 19 years, so how much time you got?

Full-field tee times from the Sony Open in HawaiiSony Open in Hawaii: Articles, photos and videos
After 18 trips to Q-School and a decade bouncing around the Web.com Tour, Thompsons breakthrough came last year when he posted three consecutive top-5 finishes on the secondary circuit to secure his Tour card. Those are some pretty stressful rounds, but I was playing good golf, said Thompson, who had made just two starts on Tour before this season. Both of those events came in 2014 when he Monday qualified for the Byron Nelson and survived sectional qualifying to play the U.S. Open at Pinehurst, where he explained he endured a typical journeyman week.(Gary Woodland) was nice enough to let me fly out with him on his jet to Pinehurst, so we flew out of Lawrence (Kan.). It was two hours and like five minutes door to door. I was on the tee like three hours after we left Lawrence, Thompson said. I missed the cut and he made the cut so I was on my own to get back home. I drove the courtesy car up to Raleigh (N.C.); Southwest flight to Chicago; three-hour layover; get back to Kansas City, somebody has to come get me. It took like 11-and-a-half hours to get home. The Sony Open is Thompsons fourth start on Tour this season. He's missed two cuts and was T-45 at the Sanderson Farms Championship.

Ryder Cup match recaps: Europe wins 17 1/2 to 10 1/2

SAINT-QUENTIN-EN-YVELINES, France For the sixth straight time, Europe won the Ryder Cup on its home soil.Captain's Thomas Bjorn's team topped the U.S., 17 1/2 to 10 1/2, on Sunday.Francesco Molinari locked up the clinching point when Phil Mickelson hit his tee shot in the water at the par-3 16th and conceded the match to The Open champion, 4 and 2, while still on the tee.The Americans remain winless on European soil since 1993. Europeans have now won seven of the last nine events, dating back to 2002.Molinari became the first European player in history to go 5-0-0 in a Ryder Cup, as the senior leaders of the U.S. team, Mickelson and Tiger Woods, combined to go 0-6-0.Sergio Garcia is now the all-time leader in Ryder Cup points won with 25 1/2, while Mickelson is now the all-time leader in matches lost with 22.Here's how all the matches played out this week at Le Golf National outside Paris:

Match scoring from the 42nd Ryder CupRyder Cup: Articles, photos and videos
TOTAL SCORE: EUROPE 17 1/2, U.S. 10 1/2 Sunday singles: Europe 7 1/2, U.S. 4 1/2 Match 17: Thomas (US) def. McIlroy (E), 1upIncredible match from beginning to end. One of the best of the week. Thomas won the first hole, then McIlroy won the next three in a row. The match was square on the 18th tee, and McIlroy drove it into a fried-egg lie in a bunker. It didnt end well for him. He ended up conceding to Thomas in the final fairway.Match 18: Casey (E) vs. Koepka (US), halvedHard to believe, but this was the first halved match of the Ryder Cup. Neither player was ever more than 1 up at any point and both played slightly better than average. Casey's birdie on the 17th to square the match was as big a clutch moment as you can have.Match 19: Simpson (US) def. Rose (E), 3 and 2This was a bit of an upset but a point the U.S. had to have for momentum. Simpson lost his first match but quietly won his next two to become an unsung hero for an American team that desperately needed one. Rose seemed tired.Match 20: Rahm (E) def. Woods (US), 2 and 1Woods never led the match, although Rahm was never more than 2 up either. Woods appeared exhausted and unenthused. Rahm took advantage to earn his first Ryder Cup point in the grandest of fashions.Match 21: Finau (US) def. Fleetwood (E), 6 and 4Finau was an absolute monster in this match, and the previously undefeated Fleetwood couldnt do much to combat him. Finau was 5 up after nine holes and never looked back. A great, great week for Finau, who will most assuredly make more Ryder Cups.Match 22: Poulter (E) def. Johnson (US), 2 up Poulter turned into Poulter one more time against the worlds top-ranked player. Poulter was 2 up after four holes, but Johnson was up after 12. Poulter would have none of it. He birdied 14 and 15 to seize control, closing it out on 18.Match 23: Olesen (E) def. Spieth (US), 5 and 4Some things defy explanation, and Spieth now goes to 0-6 all-time in singles play for U.S. teams in the Presidents and Ryder cups. Olesen sat out all day on Saturday and came out steady against Spieth, who made only one birdie.Match 24: Garcia (E) def. Fowler (US), 2 and 1The full point made Garcia the top point earner in the history of the Ryder Cup, surpassing Nick Faldo. This match was fairly close, too, but Fowler never led at any point. The cup was determined before this was over, so it was icing on the European cake.Match 25: Molinari (E) def. Mickelson (US), 4 and 2When Mickelson dunked it in the water on the 16th hole, Molinari clinched the winning point for Europe and also went a perfect 5-0 for the week. Just an incredible week for The Open champion. Mickelson played poorly again and ended the week 0-2.Match 26: Reed (US) def. Hatton (E), 3 and 2Reed made up in part for poor performances the previous two days in a match that he won easily against an overmatched Hatton. Too bad for the Americans that the cup was decided well before this point.Match 27: Stenson (E) def. Watson (US), 5 and 4Watson remains winless in Ryder Cup singles matches and Stenson was 3 up after five holes. Again, this was not really particularly close and Watson struggles. Stenson birdies four of the first seven holes.Match 28: Noren (E) def. DeChambeau (US), 1 upThis match went all the way 18 long after the matches have been decided. One down with one to play, DeChambeau flagged his approach to the final green, but Noren holed a lengthy birdie putt to end the matches and officially start the European celebration.
TOTAL SCORE: EUROPE 10, U.S. 6Saturday afternoon foursomes: Europe 2, U.S. 2Match 13: Rose-Stenson (E) def. Johnson-Koepka (US), 2 and 1The closest match of the session, and its no surprise that it came down to Stenson making a 10-footer to save par on the 17th hole to win the match. Rose and Stenson continue to roll when paired together while Johnson and Koepka couldnt recapture magic of the past.Match 14: Watson-Simpson (US) def. Garcia-Noren (E), 3 and 2This was a questionable foursomes lineup for the U.S. and it turns out it was their best duo. Garcia and Noren slapped it around in average fashion, as Watson and Simpson went 4 up through eight and easily hold on.Match 15: Molinari-Fleetwood (E) def. Woods-DeChambeau, 5 and 4This was a clinic from the very beginning, and the victory gave the European team a perfect 4-0 record together this week. Both played great and never allowed any openings for the Americans. On the other hand, Woods (0-3) and DeChambeau (0-2) played awful and are both winless on the week.Match 16: Spieth-Thomas (US) def. Poulter-McIlroy (E), 4 and 3Poulter and McIlroy looked like they both finally ran out of gas. They didnt provide much of a fight for Spieth and Thomas, particularly down the stretch. The Americans were only 1 up after seven but appeared in control and were 4 up after 13.
TOTAL SCORE: EUROPE 8, U.S. 4Saturday morning fourballs: Europe 3, U.S. 1Match 9: Garcia-McIlroy (E) def. Koepka-Finau (US), 2 and 1Garcia and McIlroy were putting demons, making everything they needed to make. They were 4 up after 13, they lost the next three holes in a row, and then Garcia sealed it with a monster birdie putt on the 17th. They were a combined 7 under par.Match 10: Casey-Hatton (E) def. Johnson-Fowler (US), 3 and 2The Americans didnt do anything spectacular and honestly they were lucky to take the match as deep as they did. The Europeans were a combined 9 under, and theres just nothing you can do with that kind of display. Caseys putter was on fire.Match 11: Molinari-Fleetwood (E) def. Woods-Reed (US), 4 and 3A thumping of epic proportions. Reed played as poorly as anyone has ever played in the Ryder Cup. Ever. Woods kept them in the match until European putters heated up again, winning four of the last five holes. This Euro duo is now 3-0 together.Match 12: Spieth-Thomas (US) def. Poulter-Rahm (E), 2 and 1The only bright spot for the Americans in the session, and they had to fight for it. Rahm and Poulter werent on top form, and Spieth and Thomas combined for 10 birdies, including a huge one on the 17th that kept the match from going the full way.

TOTAL SCORE: EUROPE 5, U.S. 3Friday afternoon foursomes: Europe 4, U.S. 0Match 5: Stenson-Rose (E) def. Johnson-Fowler (US), 3 and 2This match wasnt even as close as it seemed, and it set the tone for Europe to roll in the entire session. The Americans were over par and Stenson and Rose played well together again even though they didnt really need to.Match 6: McIlroy-Poulter (E) def. Watson-Simpson (US), 4 and 2The European train keeps rolling with an easy win. They were 2 down after five holes, but won the next four consecutive holes to cruise against a U.S. team that was over par. McIlroy needed this after a poor performance in the morning and Poulter was never going to be denied.Match 7: Garcia-Noren (E) def. Mickelson-DeChambeau (US), 5 and 4Europe was 7 up after nine. Yes, thats correct. The Americans were awful early and hit poor shot after poor shot. Garcia and Noren were antsy after sitting in the morning and just steamrolled to the easiest of wins. Four birdies in a five-hole stretch were too much.Match 8: Molinari-Fleetwood (E) def. Thomas-Spieth (US), 5 and 4Another blowout, this one to cap a European clean sweep of the session. The Americans had no gas and were over par, while Molinari and Fleetwood were steady and smooth, winning for the second time on the day. Yes, Europe seems to have found another unstoppable duo.

Friday morning fourballs: U.S. 3, Europe 1Match 1: Koepka-Finau (US) def. Rose-Rahm (E), 1 upThe only time the U.S. led the match was after the 18th hole. Incredible. Europe was in complete control after the 12th hole, but quickly went cold when Koepka and Finau caught fire. A bad mix for the blue.Match 2: Johnson-Fowler (US) def. McIlroy-Olesen (E), 4 and 2Match was even for eight of the first nine holes, but the Americans turned it on quickly and pulled away in the easiest match of the session. McIlroy played horribly the whole time and failed to make a single birdie.Match 3: Spieth-Thomas (US) def. Casey-Hatton (E), 1 upAll the matches of this session were great but this one was particularly wild. Spieth did Spieth things (5 under through seven) to get them 3 up after 10, but the Americans lost the next three holes in a row. Thomas birdie on 15 was the difference.Match 4: Molinari-Fleetwood (E) def. Woods-Reed, 3 and 1The Americans won Nos. 9 and 10 to go 2 up, but Europe won the next two to square the match. Fleetwoods putter was on fire down the stretch in a match Europe had to have. Reed and Woods played decent, but never found a groove together, especially late.

Creamer replaces injured Korda on U.S. Solheim Cup team

Creamer replaces injured Korda on U.S. Solheim Cup team

Paula Creamers disappointment failing to make a U.S. Solheim Cup team for the first time in her professional career was short lived.Captain Juli Inkster revealed Tuesday that she named Creamer as the alternate who will replace injured Jessica Korda on the 12-woman American team that will meet the Europeans next week in Iowa. The reason is that Paulas been there, Inkster said. She knows what is going on. She has the experience. She is playing well. Its important to note Inkster had to choose her alternate on Sunday evening, not knowing how serious the injury to Kordas right forearm was and whether Korda might have to end up withdrawing on the eve of the Solheim Cup.Instead, Korda announced on Monday that she was reluctantly withdrawing from the event.I felt if Paula had to come in Wednesday night and tee it up on Friday, she could handle that, Inkster said. I wanted the experience and someone who was not afraid to step in at that point.Inkster said she didnt have anyone else in mind besides Creamer when she submitted the name of her alternate on Sunday night.I have a lot of faith and confidence in Paula, Inkster said. She reminds me a lot of myself as far as heart and grit.Creamer was not in good form two years ago, when Inkster named her as one of her U.S. Solheim Cup captains picks going to Germany. Inkster quickly showed her faith in Creamer by sending her out in the opening match with Morgan Pressel. They teamed to take down Europes best team, Anna Nordqvist and Suzann Pettersen, 3 and 2 in foursomes.Inkster also sent Creamer out as her anchor in Sunday singles, and Creamer defeated Germanys Sandra Gal to complete the United States historic comeback victory in Germany. Creamer was 2-2 in Germany. In six Solheim Cups, Creamer is 14-8-5. Her 16  points are more than any American in the matches outside Inkster ( 18 ) and Cristie Kerr (17 ), but Creamer has struggled on tour the last two seasons. After missing the cut at the U.S. Womens Open one month ago, Creamer appeared to be a long shot to make the American team. It was her fourth missed cut in her last five starts. She had slumped to 92nd on the LPGA money list and a career-worst 127th in the Rolex Womens World Rankings. Also, for the first time in her career, Creamer wasnt qualified to play in the Ricoh Womens British Open. She had to advance through a qualifier three days before the championship to earn a spot.Creamer said after returning home following the U.S. Womens Open missed cut, she found something in her work with swing coach Gary Gilchrist. She tied for 13th at the Ladies Scottish Open two weeks ago and tied for 16th at the Womens British Open last weekend. Its been a bit of a roller coaster, Creamer said of her emotions. Its been a whirlwind.I have definitely put in the time. Ive been working so hard. I know people say that, and its just words, but its been starting to show. Ive been staying positive. I knew it was just a matter of time that it was going to happen.Inkster said she was disappointed Korda was hurt and had to withdraw. Korda made the team finishing fifth on the U.S. points list. Inkster praised Korda for thinking of the team above herself in letting her know quickly how serious the injury was.

Feng leads A. Lee, H..J. Choi at U.S. Women's Open

Thanks to a birdie at the last and a 1-under 71, Shanshan Feng will take a one-shot lead over Amy Yang and amateur Hye-Jin Choi into the final round of the U.S. Womens Open. Heres where things stand through 54 holes at Bedminster:Leaderboard: Feng (-9), Yang (-8), Choi (-8), Sung Hyun Park (-6), Mirim Lee (-5), So Yeon Ryu (-5), Jeongeun Lee (-5)Sunday setup: Feng is in pursuit of her eighth LPGA title and her second major, following her breakthrough at the 2012 LPGA Championship. Sixth in the world, Feng took the bronze last summer in Rio, won twice last fall in Asia, and most recently came away victorious at the Volvik in May. She is famous (infamous?) for not looking at leaderboards on Sunday. Yang has once again put herself in position to win a major, particularly the U.S. Open. The No. 9 player in the Rolex rankings has 10 career top-5 finishes in majors and has twice been runner-up at this event. In her last seven starts at the U.S. Womens Open, shes finished in the top 10 six times. Choi, 17, is the second-ranked amateur in the world and yet another emerging talent from South Korea. South Koreans have won six of the last nine U.S. Womens Opens. Of the top seven heading into Sundays final round, Feng, from China, is the only player not from South Korea.Round of the day: Park and Mirim Lee both posted 5-under 67. Lee was bogey-free while Park dropped just one shot. The two combined to play the back nine at Bedminster 9 under.Best of the rest: Christina Kim and Eun Hee Ji posted lower scores, but Chois round of 2-under 70 made her just the fourth amateur to claim a share of the lead at the U.S. Womens Open, joining Morgan Pressel (2005), Michelle Wie (2005), and Catherine Lacoste, who went on to win in 1967.Biggest disappointment: Stacy Lewis worked her way to one off the lead at minus-7 when she played her first 10 holes in 5 under, with four straight birdies on Nos. 7-10. And then she totally collapsed. Lewis tripled the 11th, bogeyed the 12th and made a 10 at the par-5 18th to shoot 4-over 76 and fall in eight holes from 7 under to 2 over.
