Davidson's Ross shoots 57 at Dogwood Invitational

Alex Ross and his playing competitors had just 10 minutes to eat lunch before heading back out to complete a 36-hole Thursday at the Dogwood Invitational. As they rushed to the 10th tee for their third round at Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta, the foursome joked about the likelihood that all four players would miss the cut.Ross, who had opened his tournament in 75-73 and sat at 4 over, playfully asked the starter what the course record was.He told me 60, Ross said. I said, OK, I guess Ill go after that.Ross broke that record by three shots. The Davidson rising junior shot 15-under 57 on the par-72, 6,836-yard layout, carding 13 birdies and an eagle. My phone is a mess right now, Ross told GolfChannel.com Thursday night. I cant even comprehend whats going on. Im still kind of in shock right now.Ross shot 9-under 27 on the back nine his first nine chipping in on his opening hole and eagling the par-5 14th after hitting 6-iron to 30 feet. He drove the green at the par-4 16th and two-putted from 15 feet. From then on, it was just ridiculous, said Ross, who birdied seven of his final 10 holes, as well.

Ross, an Atlanta native, had only played Druid Hills a couple of times with some friends who are members. This is his first Dogwood appearance. He tried to qualify last year but missed by a shot after hitting his tee ball out of bounds on his final hole and making double bogey.A year later and he found himself making history, smashing Webb Simpsons previous course record. (Former North Carolina player Ben Griffin previously held the tournament record with a 61 in 2013.)Ross played in all 11 tournaments for the Wildcats as a sophomore, recording four top-10s and a 73.03 scoring average. He was a first-team All-Atlantic 10 Conference selection. But his personal-best college round was 67 or 10 shots higher than the score he posted Thursday afternoon.Yeah, this is by far my best accomplishment, Ross said. Not even close. The Guinness Book of World Records recognizes Rhein Gibsons 16-under 55 as the lowest official round of golf ever recorded. Gibson, then a college player at Oklahoma Christian, posted the number at River Oaks Golf Club in Edmond, Okla., in 2012.As for tournaments, Bobby Wyatt shot 57 at the 2010 Alabama Boys Junior before going on to star at Alabama. At the mens pro level, Jim Furyk holds the PGA Tour record with a 12-under 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship. Five more players Stephan Jaeger (Web.com Tour), Ryo Ishikawa (Japan Tour), Shigeki Maruyama (U.S. Open qualifying), John Hahn (European Tour Q-School) and Jason Bohn (Canadian Tour) have shot 58 in a tournament round, though Bohns 58 came on a course shorter than 6,500 yards.Asked where his record-breaking golf ball was, Ross replied, Its a little scuffed up, but I didnt want to change it out. I hope my mom has it.Stephanie Ross showed up on the third hole of her sons third round. He didnt know she was coming. When Alex was a junior golfer, his mom used to head back into the clubhouse when hed start playing poorly. She used to think she was my bad-luck charm, he said. But she was my good-luck charm today.Ross is 11 under and suddenly back in the tournament, which concludes Friday. Hell enter the final round hoping to have answered his many texts and voicemails while also preparing to track down co-leaders Spencer Ralston of Georgia and Jacob Solomon of Auburn. (Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo withdrew after nine holes of his second round Thursday.)Now I get to go out and try to win the tournament, Ross said. Im just going to try and make some more birdies and give it a run.A run at that new course record, though, will be a tall task.

This is the main table in the chapter, on which the title is based. It (Table 31:8) compares a 50% reduction in long approach shot errors (completely unrealistic given the 14% above) with "doubling the accuracy of putting" (also completely unrealistic) with hitting drives 20 yards further and having them all finish in the fairway (also completely unrealistic).

The Grouse Grind in Vancouver is 2830 steps directly up the side of a steep mountain. It takes most people an hour. Extrapolated, that would be about 2 and a half hours. Adjusted for fatigue, let's call it 3 and half. Either way, hikes are fun! Especially long ones that go real high where you can run into rams and have an awesome view at the end.
