Walker Cup returning to St. Andrews in 2023

The Walker Cup is heading back to the Old Course at St. Andrews in 2023, nearly 50 years after the biennial matches were last held on the venerable Scottish links. The R&A made the venue announcement Monday, two weeks after St. Andrews was named host of The Open in 2021. This will mark the ninth time that the Old Course hosts the Walker Cup, more than any other venue, but the first since 1975 when a U.S. team led by Curtis Strange and Craig Stadler emerged victorious. The announcement continues a trend of premier destinations hosting the amateur team event between the U.S. and Great Britain & Ireland. Last year's American victory took place at Los Angeles Country Club, site of the 2023 U.S. Open, while future venues include Royal Liverpool (2019), Seminole (2021) and Cypress Point (2025).First contested in 1922, the Walker Cup has been held 46 times, with the U.S. winning 36 times and tying once. But of the nine wins for Team GB&I, six have come since 1995, and the U.S. has won just once in six tries on foreign soil over that span.
