Lee Elder made history on this day in 1974, winning the Monsanto Open to become the first black player to qualify for the Masters, which he played in 1975.The victory was one of his 12 professional wins, including four on the PGA Tour and eight on the PGA Tour Champions. A pioneering force in the game of golf, Lee Elder will receive the USGA Bob Jones Award in a ceremony on June 12, 2019, during the week of the 119th U.S. Open Championship at Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links. Elder is the first African American to be honored with the prestigious award.
