Haas involved in fatal car crash; released from hospital
Bill Haas was released from the hospital after being involved in a fatal car crash Tuesday in Pacific Palisades, Calif.Haas, who was scheduled to play in this weeks Genesis Open, and an unidentified 50-year-old woman were both taken to a nearby hospital.Haas father, Jay, told Golf Channel reporter Todd Lewis that Bill has pain and swelling in his leg but suffered no broken bones. The 35-year-old is expected to make a full recovery.Bill was very fortunate, Jay Haas told Golf Channel.The rollover crash Tuesday in Pacific Palisades, near Riviera Country Club, involved a Ferrari and a BMW and was reported at 6:30 p.m. local time. The driver of the Ferrari, Mark Gibello, 71, was pronounced dead at the scene. Haas was a passenger in the Ferrari.Gibello was close friends with Haas swing coach, Billy Harmon, and was "instrumental" in bringing the Walker Cup (2017) and U.S. Open (2023) to Los Angeles Country Club, according to Golf Channel insider Tim Rosaforte.Gibello was hosting Haas and his family during this week's event. The PGA Tour and Haas management company, Players Group Management, released a joint statement Wednesday morning that Haas has withdrawn from the Genesis Open and was headed home to Greenville, S.C., to recover: While Bill escaped serious injuries and has been released from the hospital, he is understandably shaken up and more importantly his deepest condolences go out to the host family during this tragic and difficult time. Actor Luke Wilson was also involved in the multi-car accident his SUV was clipped, according to authorities but he was not injured.
